Here is a selection of tributes paid by those who knew 'Big Mal'. Colin Bell, former City midfielder: "He was a big influence on my career and I wouldn't have achieved the levels that I did without his motivation and coaching ability." Francis Lee, former City striker: "Definitely one of football's great characters, big in life, big in character and great fun to be with." Nora Mercer, wife of former Blues boss Joe: "I was very fond of Malcolm, I knew he could be a bit of a rogue at times, but he was always very polite with me and he got on famously with my husband Joe." Mike Summerbee, former City winger: "He was also one of the lads - in effect he was the 12th player from the sidelines but he knew how to crack the whip and we respected him." City Life president and former general secretary Bernard Halford, who knew Malcolm for more than 40 years, said: "We will never see the likes of him ever again, and he did so much for the club. The signing of Tony Book was a masterstroke, but he enhanced the careers of so many other players and they worshipped him." Steve Daley, bought by Allison for City, said: "Malcolm was a guy who just oozed charisma. He was so buoyant and up for everything... a fantastic guy."
