Ireland reveals extra work

Stephen Ireland has revealed he trained all summer "as a hobby" before netting in Manchester City's first game of the season. The midfielder scored the second goal in City's 2-0 victory at Blackburn, and believes his extra fitness after weeks of solo summer work has paid dividends. Ireland said: "The win is a great start for us. There are obviously high expectations this season and winning away from home sets us up, especially since that was one of our problems last season. "The summer training I do on my own is almost a hobby, I do it because I enjoy it, as much as anything. But I do feel as though I have hit the ground running, and there is more to come."
