Cup comeback: Robinho should return for City in time for their Carling Cup tie against Scunthorpe United

The club record £34m signing, who has been linked with a January move to Barcelona, has been out since August with a stress fracture of his ankle.

He has missed five games so far and may struggle to regain his place.

But manager Mark Hughes said: 'Robi is not far away, he's probably got about 10 more days and then he can be back in the group.

'He's working every day, we're trying to get him back as soon as we can but with a bone injury there is a certain length of time to give it the injury.'

City, meanwhile, are the latest side to run the rule over Palermo's 6ft 3ins Danish defender Simon Kjaer, 20.

They are also holding talks about a partnership with French Ligue Two side Arles-Avignon
