Hughes to keep spending

Mark Hughes has warned that Manchester City will continue to spend until they break into the English elite. City have spent huge sums in the last year, with the likes of Robinho, Shay Given, Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure among the players to have arrived. Those signings have led many to suggest that City could break into the top four this season and, while Hughes is not raising expectations at this stage, he believes the club's new owners are willing to continue the spending until they achieve their goals. "We did good business in January and excellent business in this window, but it may take a few more transfer windows before we can really say that we are one of the top teams in the Premier League," he said. "I don't think we will spend on this scale again. "The spending we've done should sustain us but I'm sure we'll have to add in the windows ahead of us." Unity Several Premier League managers have criticised City for the way they have gone about their business since the takeover, and Sir Alex Ferguson described them as, 'a small club with a small mentality' last month. However, Hughes admits he is happy about the negative comments as he is using them to fire up his squad ahead of the new campaign. "The remarks have been noted," he added in The Sun. "Sometimes it helps my job when people question us because it brings us together as a group." He added: "The only way to stop those people who hope we fail from having a loud voice is by winning matches. "That is what we're expected to do and that's what we'll try to do."
