Hughes shrugs off criticism

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has dismissed criticism from Sir Alex Ferguson over the club's spending spree this summer. Cash-rich City have splashed out big this summer for Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry as they look to challenge the top four. Manchester United chief Ferguson has hit out at City's spending, describing it as "stupid" and "unrealistic" and being responsible for inflating prices. More big-name signings are expected to make their way to Eastlands before the close of the transfer window and Hughes is not worried about criticism of their transfer dealings. "Prices are possibly inflated for Manchester United because their valuations of players will be different to ours," said Hughes. "The worth to us of a player like Carlos Tevez's quality is possibly higher than it is to United because of their position they are in in their development. "We paid £25million and I think that's good value given some of the transfers, namely Ronaldo to Madrid. "The market is quite warm to say the least! We are just trying to do the best for our club. To get good players we have to spend money. "We haven't had the benefit of Champions League money over a long period and we haven't had the success to generate the large amounts of money. "All the squads and managers have spent large amounts to be successful. That has never changed. We are trying to be successful and, to do that, we have to spend money. "We understand how people may view us at this time, when times are hard financially for a lot of people. "But football sometimes bucks that trend, almost always, certainly at the top level."
