Hughes set to wield the axe

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes admits he will need to cut a number of players from his squad. City - with the backing of their Abu Dhabi based owners - are expected to again make some major signings in the summer. However, with a squad of well over 30 already and an academy that continues to blossom, City realise they need to trim their ranks. Hughes admits ideally he would want no more than 25 players in his squad and at the moment he is working well over that limit. "Although we have brought players in, we haven't shed a great deal. We'll have to do that because we have to have a manageable squad. "Ideally, you would want 23 or 24 and then have academy players of sufficient quality to back them up. "If you have more than 25 it is difficult to have a meaningful training session. "When I first got the job I thought the squad was imbalanced. I think it is better now but there are some issues to address."
