Hughes hits out at Neville

Mark Hughes has described Gary Neville as a 'lunatic' for his excessive celebrations following Michael Owen's winner against Manchester City. Craig Bellamy's second goal at Old Trafford looked like securing a 3-3 draw against Manchester United before Owen clinched the points deep into injury-time. Neville cheered United's winner on the field of play before racing down the touchline towards City's fans, before thinking better of his actions and pretending to warm-up on the way back to the bench. The incident comes soon after City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was hit with an FA improper conduct charge for racing virtually the length of the pitch to celebrate his goal against Arsenal in front of the Gunners' fans. Hughes says Sir Alex Ferguson's delight at Owen's goal reminded him of Steve Bruce's headed winner against Sheffield Wednesday back in 1993 when he and assistant Brian Kidd famously ran onto the pitch following their injury-time winner. The City boss is aggrieved his side failed to secure the point their play merited, however, he did take comfort in the fact that United's delight demonstrated the significance of the result. "I saw Gary Neville running off like a lunatic," explained Hughes. "What I saw reminded me of Sir Alex and Brian Kidd. "It shows what it meant to them. It shows we can compete. "We came back three times and showed great quality and character as a team."
