Manchester City chief Mark Hughes hailed Shay Given after he helped his new side to a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Given, who joined the club last week from Newcastle, marked his debut with an impressive showing, making four superb saves to deny Afonso Alves.

Hughes was delighted with his new signing and he believes the Irishman's experience will help his side.

"When we needed him he produced for us," Hughes told Sky Sports 1. "I just felt he gave us a little bit of reassurance at the back with a couple of saves he made.

"We've got a young back four and sometimes you need a bit of experience behind you to settle everybody down and we had that from Shay.

"We're delighted to win because it was important we got back to winning ways. We are on a decent run of form."

Hughes also praised match-winner Craig Bellamy after he netted his second goal for the club following his arrival from West Ham.

"The players we have brought in are having an impact because they know this league and how hard you have to work to make an impression in the Premier League," added Hughes.

"I thought Craig and a couple of others were outstanding."
