Heal the pain: Ferdinand is driven by fear of another derby day disaster

Rio Ferdinand is confident the hurt of losing a 34-year unbeaten home record against Manchester City last year will ensure United do not slip up again in tomorrow's derby clash. City gatecrashed what should have been a commemoration of the Busby Babes, when they won at Old Trafford last season, making their own personal mark on the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash. The Red Devils' response was to win the Premier League and Champions League double, so the defeat was hardly a calamity. However, the personal pride of Ferdinand and his team-mates did take a dent. This time around, with another championship so close, the England defender is anxious not to suffer a repeat. 'If you are going to be champions and reach cup finals, you need a feeling of hurt when you lose games,' said Ferdinand.
