HATCHET MAN: It's incredible an inconsistent player like Ireland can stall over City's £80,000-a-we

Stephen Ireland must be having another of his spectacular brainstorms if he thinks he can hold Manchester City to ransom over a new contract. The midfielder has been offered a new deal that more than doubles his salary but he is still not happy. He has been offered somewhere between £60-80,000-a-week depending on who you  believe but has raised the prospect of seeing out the two years left on his current deal without signing up. It is a risky strategy because there is no knowing what City will be like in a year or two. The possibility of an overhaul of the managerial set-up and squad is real and who is to say Ireland will maintain his form? More pertinent is the fact that other clubs simply cannot or would not meet  the wage demands of a player whose character has often been questioned.
