HATCHET MAN: Hughes will run out of time at City even if he signs the best players in the world

Mark Hughes has said repeatedly that Manchester City's owners understand the work that needs to be done at their club to make them great. But will they really put up with another misfiring season if the manager guts the squad in the summer and starts again? As many as 16 players could leave in a clearout and if even half as many join in their places it will be a whole new team that Hughes has to knit together. If City are going to compete with the Premier League's best, never mind Europe's, there is little doubt that it needs to be done, but a large number of players have been brought in for this season and it has not exactly brought instant success. Players take time to gel - even very good ones (although the best will still be sceptical about moving to Eastlands) - but what chance is there of that being acceptable to the owners? Hatchet Man's money is on Hughes doing the hard work and somebody else swanning in to claim the credit.
