Given calls for stability

Shay Given believes Manchester City must keep faith with Mark Hughes if they are to match their ambition of becoming a top club. The Republic of Ireland international is all too aware of how damaging managerial instability can be to a team after spending 12-years at Newcastle. He swapped the madness at St James' Park for that at Eastlands during the January transfer window as City's quest to become a major force in world football continued. Given feels City have the potential to be challenging for major honours in the not too distant future, but is hoping the Abu Dhabi United Group will keep faith with their current manager until that success arrives. "We have more potential here than we did at Newcastle," said the experienced shot-stopper. "But I had some good years up there and when Newcastle were getting great financial backing off the Halls and the Shepherds there was a great opportunity that went to waste. "The instability that came about because Newcastle were changing managers every couple of years just wasn't good for the club. "What has happened this year is a perfect example of what can go wrong. "Kevin Keegan left and Joe Kinnear came in on a temporary basis and there was no stability whatsoever. "For me, keeping your manager and staff in place and giving them time is an important factor in a successful football club. "Mark Hughes knows his players now. "He knows who he wants to be here next season as well as his transfer targets. "We need him here if City are going to move forward. "He did a great job for Blackburn, and before that Wales, and I think he commands huge respect."
