Getting to know the opposition: FC Timisoara

Manchester City are the super-rich Premier League behemoths with the ability to buy almost any player on the planet. But who on earth are FC Timisoara?

It's time for the Football.co.uk (very) rough guide.

City's Europa League play-off opponents hail from Romania, and from what we're googling have a combined squad value of £21.5 million - which buys you almost a whole Yaya Toure and about two-thirds of a Robinho.

Timisoara's owner is Marin Iancu, the president of a UK-based oil firm no less (thank you BBC for that one), who has invested over £30m in the club and is super-confident they will knock City out over two legs.

The club did achieve a major shock last season when they beat Shaktar Donesk in the Champions League qualifiers, but they fell at the next hurdle to VFB Stuttgart.

It's worth noting that both home ties finished 0-0 at the Stadionul Dan Paltinisanu in Timisoara, which holds around 32,000. So it might not be the shooting gallery some City fans will be expecting.

As for players to watch, midfielder Cosmin Contra (pictured) has passed by Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and West Brom on his journey to Romania. Striker Dorin Gora is one of three players brought for over a million euros and has scored Europa league goals against Ajax and Dinamo Zagreb.

Timisoara were established under their current name in 2002, although did exist before as AEK Bucuresti. Their's is a complicated evolution that requires far more depth than this website can give time to.
