Former Manchester City player George Smith has died at the age of 92, the club have confirmed.

Smith, who was an inside forward, played for City between 1946 and 1951, scoring 75 goals in 166 appearances before moving on to Chesterfield.

He was badly injured whilst on duty in east Africa during the Second World War following a machine gun attack by the South African air force, but it did not stop him from going on to play for City and in 1946 he netted all four goals for them in a 4-1 derby victory over Manchester United.
