Distin wanted regular role

Sylvain Distin has insisted he was not interested in joining Manchester City or Liverpool because he might have had to settle for a place on the substitutes' bench. The French defender completed a move from Portsmouth to Everton late last month after a lot of speculation about his future over the summer. Manchester City were reportedly keen to bring Distin back to Eastlands but he admits he would not have played regularly as Mark Hughes had already signed Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure. Distin is delighted to have joined the Toffees and is looking forward to playing a major role for his new club. "I read about some interest from City. But when I saw the kind of names they were signing, if I went back I'd be on the bench," said the 31-year-old. "It was not what you might call in England 'my cup of tea'. "It's the same with Liverpool who were interested. I didn't want to be a squad player."
