Cook: It's not about the money

The current spending spree by Manchester City is more than just about throwing big money around, according to executive chairman Gary Cook, who insists the players coming in are an investment for the future. The Barclays Premier League club are in South Africa for a three-match pre-season tour but, after spending more than £150million in the past year, most of the talk has been about who will be the next arrival at Eastlands. Argentina striker Carlos Tevez became the latest acquisition earlier this week, with Emmanuel Adebayor of Arsenal close to signing, while manager Mark Hughes is still continuing his pursuit of Chelsea defender John Terry. "This isn't really about spending," said Cook. "I'd like to just make sure the message is clear that we're investing in the future of the football club. "The investments we're making currently will define the football club for the next 10 years. When you do that to compete with the top four in the Premier League, you have to invest to reach those new levels."
