City flop Fernandes set to complete move to St Etienne

Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes is joining St Etienne in a £2m deal. The Switzerland midfielder found himself on the fringes last season after manager Mark Hughes arrived from Blackburn. Fernandes, 22, left the club's training camp last night to travel to France for a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with Alain Perrin's side. The Swiss was snapped up from FC Sion by Sven Goran Eriksson at City in 2007 with a big reputation as one of Europe's risings stars but fell victim to the influx of big-money signings at Eastlands. He made 59 appearances, scoring four times, for City but he was increasingly used as a substitute and made just three starts after Hughes took over.
