Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has won his personal battle to stop Carlos Tevez playing for Argentina in their friendly against Russia next week. Hughes had asked Argentina officials not to play his new striker after he sprained his left ankle, and it has emerged that Tevez called coach Diego Maradona personally to inform him that he had picked up the injury. The Argentine Football Association said in a statement: 'Dr. Donato Villani, the national team doctor, said the player (Tevez)has communicated with coach (Maradona) to tell him about the ankleinjury.' Reasons to be cheerful: Manchester City boss Mark Hughes Hughes was anxious for him not to play, believing that the player needs to focus on more training at home ahead of the new Premier League season. The City boss told the club's website: 'Ideally, I'd prefer that he wasn't selected. He's not trained all pre-season. 'He had an injury from his last international then banged the same area when he slipped in the shower. 'He'll be fine for the start of the season, but he's still not able to put his full weight on it.' Tevez definitely won't play in City's friendly clash with Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday night, but Hughes remains confident he can feature in their opening league match at Blackburn on August 15. Meanwhile Juan Sebastian Veron will also miss Argentina's friendly match in Moscow, having failed to recover from a leg muscle injury. The match will be seen as important preparation ahead of Argentina's crucial clash with old rivals Brazil on September 5.
