Carlos Tevez still delays Manchester City debut as striker fails to beat knock

Manchester City have postponed Carlos Tevez's debut again because of his heel injury. The Argentina striker missed the team's audience with former South Africa president Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg on Thursday and a scan on the injury that ruled him out of Tuesday's win over Kaizer Chiefs in Durban revealed bruising that will sideline him for 10 days. Tevez aggravated the injury in training, and apart from missing tomorrow's Vodacom Challenge final, manager Mark Hughes will be reluctant to risk him in a friendly at Barnsley a week tomorrow. Indeed, Tevez may not play until City meet Rangers at Ibrox on August5, just 10 days before they start their season at Blackburn. Hughes' other new £25million striker, Emmanuel Adebayor, is expected to make his debut tomorrow but he and Tevez will have, at most, two friendlies - Rangers and Celtic three days later - to forge a partnership. City met Mandela for more than half an hour yesterday at his children's foundation. They sang happy birthday to Mandela, who was 91 last Saturday, and presented him with a signed shirt. Many players were in awe of their host - with some said to be close to tears - but he put them at ease with light-hearted banter, teasing 6ft 3in Adebayor about his height and joking that Robinho looked too young to be a professional footballer. Hughes is not fazed by the expensive talent in his dressing room, saying: 'Top players are easier to handle.' Felipe Caicedo has gone to Sporting Lisbon on a one-year loan and City have agreed to sell fellow striker Ched Evans to Sheffield United for £3m. City will play a friendly against Barcelona in the Nou Camp on August 19.
