Carlos banks on four-tune

Carlos Tevez admits he has scored so many goals this season he has lost count! And the City striker will not even weigh up his stunning contribution to the Blues' cause until the end of the season. The Argentine ace's hat-trick to overcome Wigan on Monday night took him to 25 for the season - equalling the best haul of his career. But when MEN Sport caught up with him afterwards, he admitted, with a grin, that he didn't know how many he had scored, and that he was unaware of his best tally. "This has been one of my best seasons, because I am scoring a lot of goals - and it feels good!" said Tevez. "I don't remember if I have scored more than this before, but this is the most important season of my life. "I feel good and want to keep this feeling going season after season. I feel strong." Tevez might not be too bothered by the statistics, but the fact is that he is one goal away from recording City's best tally in the top flight for 38 years, since Francis Lee's 35 goals fired the Blues to within a point of champions Derby. Dream But he won't be resting on any laurels - his aim is to carry the City banner into the Champions League for the first time, by racking up the points over the last seven league games. "It's my dream and the dream of the whole club to get into the Champions League, and we will do everything we can to achieve it," said the 26-year-old. "Now it's important that we keep winning in the next few games." Tevez is just one goal away from recording the best total of his career to date - he also netted 25 times in 38 games in his first season in Brazilian football, with Corinthians in 2005. But his goals for City this season have come in quicker time, taking just 34 games to equal his personal best. He came to City with a reputation as a scorer of important goals, someone who would scrap and hustle, and pop up in the right place at the right time. Since coming to England, he has not made his name as a great goalscorer - he netted seven times in his first season for a struggling West Ham, and 34 over two seasons with United. His £25.5m acquisition was the biggest English signing of the summer, stoking up a storm of controversy in Manchester as City poked fun at their rivals with the infamous "Welcome to Manchester" poster. Fitness And yet Tevez's Eastlands career began with a whimper. He aggravated a heel injury by slipping in the shower during the club's pre-season South African tour, and was on the bench for the big kick-off at Blackburn. Playing catch-up in fitness terms, he looked off the pace in the opening four months of the season, scoring four goals in his first 15 matches - and two of those were against his struggling former club West Ham. Then a young Arsenal side came to Eastlands in the fifth round of the Carling Cup, and an even match needed a touch of class to decide it. Up stepped Tevez, skipping along the 18-yard line, probing for an opening, and then curling a beauty into the far top corner. It lit up the stadium, sparked a 3-0 win and set Tevez off on a run of goal-scoring form which has kept City in the hunt for that precious fourth place. Since then he has smashed, slid and bludgeoned 21 goals in 19 starts, equally happy with the scruffy goal that nicks off the studs as he is with the kind of slick solo stunner which rounded off his hat-trick against Wigan. City fans can be thankful that their new hero is a force of nature, unconcerned with records and figures, and seeing everything in terms of fight and glory.| Submit Comments| Comments (47)| PrintWhat's this?
