Cardiff have beaten off competition from Wolves and Portsmouth to sign Manchester City forward Kelvin Etuhu on a season-long loan. The Bluebirds agreed a deal for the talented 21-year-old today and he is available for selection for the club's home clash with Bristol City on Sunday. Kelvin Etuhu Bluebird swoop: Manchester City's Kelvin Etuhu heads to Cardiff Etuhu, who starred in City's run to the FA Youth Cup final in 2006, can operate as a winger or a striker. Cardiff manager Dave Jones told the club's official website, www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk: 'We are really pleased to get Kelvin - he is a Premier League player coming into the club. 'It looked like he was going to Wolves, but there was a hitch and we stepped in to bring him here. 'He is a big pacy lad who will give us options across the front line.' Whittingham's hot form has been one of the reasons Jones' men sit at the summit after three games with the player finding the net twice in four games so far. He said: 'For the team things couldn't be going much better at the moment. We are playing well and a lot of what we are trying is coming off. We've got off to an unbelievable start. 'The end of last season was heartbreaking but we have learned from it and are determined to do a better job. We are looking forward to the challenge of the derby and it is going to be a massive game.' Peter Whittingham Pleased with start: Peter Whittingham (right) Whittingham's own form dipped towards the end of last season as City fell out of the play-off picture but he now believes he is in some of the best form of his career to date. He added: 'I'm happy with how things are going and I'm playing a lot better. I just want to carry on and score goals. Two goals in four games - I'll take that, any midfielder would.' Jones is forced to shuffle his pack following Tony Capaldi's sending-off in the midweek win at Plymouth. Mark Kennedy and Stephen McPhail are both in contention to return. Meanwhile, Gary Johnson's sixth-placed Robins are also banking on an in-form goalscorer to continue their fine run with Nicky Maynard having fired consecutive winners over Crystal Palace and QPR. After a slow start to his Ashton Gate career, Maynard, who cost the club a record £2.25million last year, is finally hitting top form and has set himself an ambitious target of 20 league goals this season. Maynard said: 'My aim is to get 20-plus goals this season, definitely. Hopefully I won't think about it too much and the goals will start flowing. I'm setting my sights high this time. 'It was nice to get off the mark at Brentford and I was pleased with the goals I scored against Palace and QPR. It's even better when they are winning goals. I believe in myself and the way the team is playing.' But Johnson also has striking worries ahead of the trip to Ninian Park. On-loan Lithuanian Andrius Velicka was ruled out long-term after sustaining a serious knee injury in the midweek win over QPR.
