Brunt: Loss summed up our season

20 April 2009 12:15
Chris Brunt believes West Brom's 4-2 defeat at Manchester City sums up their season after they threw away the chance of a victory.Sunday's loss all but condemns the Baggies to the drop as they sit bottom of the Premier League table, nine points from safety with just five games to play.Tony Mowbray's side drew level after going two goals down at Eastlands and appeared to have Mark Hughes' men on the ropes. But all their good work was undone in a flash as Jonas Olsson brought down Elano inside the area with a clumsy challenge two minutes after Brunt had scored his second of the game."I felt it was the best we've played for a long time," he told the Birmingham Mail."We created lots of chances and unfortunately for us we didn't put them away and got punished."We probably should have been out of sight before Robinho scored their first. We created a few chances before our second. To concede then again put us on the back foot."It's the story of our season once again - we got ourselves into a good position and threw it away."We deserved more than we got out of the game. We created chances, played good stuff and matched Man City. But they defended better than we did and put their chances away."We've had games where we've not made the most of chances or individual mistakes have cost us, like Newcastle or Stoke."Those have been the key games that could have kick-started us."Brunt's double at the City of Manchester Stadium took his tally to six for the season and the winger always knew he could score goals at the top level."I was always confident I'd score," he added. "I got seven and 10 at Sheffield Wednesday."In the second half of this season I've had a good run of games and I like to think I've repaid the gaffer by chipping in with a few goals."I enjoy set-pieces and I've put a few away, too, but it's all been in vain. When results don't go too well it's disappointing."[LNB]
