Manchester City are in pole position to sign Brazil defender David Luiz as Benfica prepare to lower their price tag to £25million.

The Portuguese champions rejected higher bids in the summer and insisted they would not do a deal for under his £42m release clause, but now feel the 23-year-old slipping from their grasp.

Chelsea arealso interested, but neither they nor Benfica can match City when itcomes to wages - demonstrated by their offer of more than £200,000 aweek to Yaya Toure in the summer.

Benfica wanted to extend Luiz's already lengthy deal beyond 2015,but, after conceding he is unlikely to sign, will consider cashing inas soon as January in order to start rebuilding.

The cash could kickstart their disappointing season, which has seenthem knocked out of the Champions League and languishing eight pointsbehind Portguese league leaders Porto.

City had already warned Benfica they were not prepared to get in anauction and have also tracked Sporting Lisbon defender Daniel Carrico,22.
