Barry hails bright start

Gareth Barry is glad to have helped Manchester City get a first victory of the season under their belt. With the summer dominated by the Blues' transfer dealings, the start of the 2009/10 campaign could not come soon enough for the City players. They remain well aware that their substantial outlay during the transfer window has served to raise expectations at Eastlands, but Mark Hughes' squad have begun the season in confident mood. A 2-0 victory over Blackburn on Saturday has seen them get off to the perfect start and Barry admits the performance at Ewood Park has helped to raise morale even further. "It was a massive game for us, all eyes were on our performance, looking at the result and waiting for us to slip up, but it was a great team performance with great team spirit," the England international told Sky Sports News. "We are confident now going into Saturday's game (against Wolves) having taken three points from Blackburn." While aware that City will be the focus of much attention this term, Barry insists the club have not set any ambitious targets for themselves, with Hughes keen to keep the players away from the mass hysteria sweeping around Eastlands. "Not so much at the moment. The manager and the coaching staff are doing well to keep us away from the media," he added. "We are doing a lot of work on team spirit and keeping together, and at this stage of the season that is important. We are taking one game at a time and trying to go on the pitch together. "People can write a lot of things - some good, some bad. We will take one game at a time and set individual targets and take it from there. "We know we have got a great set of players in the changing room, that are capable of achieving great things. We will set individual targets and see where we are at the end." Barry has also commented on the steely focus which exists within the City camp, with every player well aware of the need to repay the faith which has been shown in them. "I noticed that straight away. As soon as I got on the training ground and met the players they were all professional, with great attitudes," said the midfielder. "That is not something I can judge on from last season, because I wasn't here, but this season it has been perfect. If we can maintain that, that can only be good."
