The second batch of third round Carling Cup ties gets underway tonight as holders Manchester United start their defence of Cup against Wolves with Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur hoping to avoid defeat to lower-league opposition. There are also all-Premier League fixtures as Fulham travel to Manchester City and Hull host Everton.[LNB]You'll catch all the action from tonight's matches with Sportsmail.[LNB]  CARLING CUP THIRD ROUND (7.45pm ko unless stated)Aston Villa 1 Cardiff 0 (FT) Chelsea 1 QPR 0 (FT) Hull 0 Everton 4 (FT)Man City 2 Fulham 1 (FT) Man Utd 1 Wolverhampton 0 (FT)Preston 1 Tottenham 5 (FT)   That's it for tonight, then. No major shocks as 10-man United eased past Wolves, Spurs spanked Preston and Everton piled on the woe for Hull. [LNB]Joe Cole made his return to the Chelsea side as captain and helped them to a derby win over QPR. [LNB]Villa saw off Cardiff's  challenge and City needed extra-time to end Fulham's Carling Cup aspirations. [LNB]Don't forget you can get all the reaction from tonight's matches right here on Sportsmail. Goodnight. [LNB]10.29: FULL TIME! City squeeze past Fulham and find themselves in Saturday's fourth round draw. [LNB]10.22: Surely that will be enough for the Citizens - Fulham have had just two shots on target all night. [LNB]10.18: GOAL! Kolo Toure breaks the deadlock for City. Martin Petrov swung a wicked cross in and the centre-back heads in in off the underside of the crossbar. [LNB]10.10: Nope, still no chances for either City or Fulham ... having said that Vladimir Weiss goes close.[LNB]10.01: It's proving to be hard work at Eastlands with both sides failing to create clearcut chances. Pens, methinks in this one.[LNB] Last past the post: Toure heads a late winner for City [LNB]9.53: EXTRA TIME! City and Fulham can't be separated in regulation time so we'll have an extra 30 minutes at Eastlands. [LNB]9.52: FULL TIME! Wolves fail to take advantage of the extra man and holders Manchester go through. [LNB]9.47: The Manchester United fans think they've seen enough - the stands are half empty! There's two minutes remaining plus whatever Fergie, sorry, I mean the official, decides to add on. [LNB]9.44: Unless Wolves pull something out the hat in the last few seconds, it looks like we will be having extra time at Eastlands only.[LNB]9.41: FULL TIME! It's finished at the KC Stadium, Everton hammered the Tigers and Villa have seen off Cardiff.[LNB]9.39: FULL TIME! It's over at Deepdale and Tottenham cruise through to the fourth round draw on Saturday. [LNB]9.37: HAT-TRICK for Crouch! Spurs' complete the demolition of Preston and it's a wonderful finish from the big man with the outside of his boot.[LNB] Magic number: Crouch celebrates his three goals against Preston[LNB]9.35: FULL TIME! Chelsea with Joe Cole back in the side ease past west London neighbours QPR.[LNB]9.31: GOAL! No, the game is not back on. Robbie Keane finally puts the game to bed after good work from Tom Huddlestone, Keane rolls the ball in from eight yards. [LNB]9.27: GOAL! Chris Brown nicks one back for Preston. Poor defending from Hutton who failed to track the run and Brown met Neil Mellor's cross. Is this game back on?[LNB]9.23: GOAL! Danny Welbeck breaks the deadlock at Old Trafford! A neat one-two with Michael Owen saw Welbeck free to slide the ball into the left-hand corner. [LNB]9.20: GOAL! Crouch gets his second of the night and fourth of the season for Tottenham. Aaron Lennon breaks through Preston's high line and cuts back for Crouch to slam home. Game Over.[LNB]9.14: Great save from Gomes at Deepdale.  Ross Wallace bends a delightful free-kick around the wall but the Brazilian keeper saves well to his left. [LNB] In the swing of it: Ireland and Lescott celebrate Barry's equaliser[LNB]9.09: GOAL! Gareth Barry levels for the Citizens. Indecision from David Stockdale allowed Barry in to head home. [LNB]9.03: MISSED PENALTY! Villa should have sealed the tie after Michel Gyepes knocksed over Stiliyan Petrov, but James Milner hits the post. [LNB]9.01: GOAL! Leon Osman piles on the misery for Hull after he scores his first goal of the season. City couldn't clear a free-kick and Osman nicked in to seal the tie ... if it needed any sealing, mind![LNB]8.59: It's all Spurs at Deepdale.[LNB] Captain's job: Joe Cole holds off Routledge in his first match back after injury[LNB]8.57: Steady yourselves ... Hull have had a chance! Pigs will never fly but Vennegoor of Hesselink had a dip from distance. Doubt they'll be scoring four here though tonight. [LNB]8.53: GOAL! Salomon Kalou turns Leigertwood inside out and cracks one in off the post. Good goal. FACT ALERT ... Chelsea have never lost when Kalou has scored for them .. in 28 matches![LNB]8.45: Cardiff have started  brightly at Villa Park and it's more of the same for Hull as Everton dominate the opening passages of the second half.[LNB]8.38: Unsurprisingly, United are prospering with just 10 men (just ask Spurs fans) Fergie has made a change, bringing on Ritchie de Laet for  Macheda. David Platt reckons young da Silva was 'really unlucky' to see red. It was a textbook rugby tackle - are you mad![LNB] Ger-old of that: Zoltan celebrates a wonder-strike for Fulham at Eastlands[LNB]8.37: GOAL! Fulham lead at City! Zoltan Gera scores a screamer from fully 25 yards. A beauty![LNB]8.34: Great chance for Michael Owen. Gary Neville shows just how much he has benefited from playing behind some great wingers over the  years as he delivers a great cross that Owen fails to convert with his head eight yards out. [LNB]8.29: RED CARD! Fabio da Silva walks for United after rugby tackling Michael Kightly. The referee had no option other than to brandish the red there. The young lad looks devastated as he walks off. Wolves had a free-kick in a great position, just a couple of yards outside the box which amounts to nought.[LNB] Off you go: Grounded Fabio da Silva gets his marching orders[LNB]8.23: GOAL! Jermaine Defoe makes it two for last season's beaten finalists, Spurs. And what a goal it was! The diminutive striker picked up the ball on the edge of the box, jinked past two defenders, his first shot was saved but he headed in the rebound. Preston will have to chase this now. [LNB]8.17: Two chances go begging ... QPR should have taken the lead after a shot from distance failed to trouble Hilario and Elliot wasted a great chance from 22 yards out to level with Spurs. [LNB]8.12: Elsewhere tonight, Wolves have had a decent chance to take the lead at Old Trafford and, believe it or not, Gomes has made a great save from John Parkin to retain Spurs' lead at Deepdale. [LNB] Nan on the run: Elokobi tries to halt the winger's run[LNB]8.10: GOAL! It's three for Everton. This is going to be a long night for Hull fans as Dan Gosling looks to have ended this tie inside 25 minutes. [LNB]8.05: GOAL! Everton double their lead. It's all too easy for Moyes' men as Jo makes in two inside twenty minutes. [LNB]8.01: GOAL! Peter Crouch gives Tottenham the lead. Gareth Bale whipped in cracking cross and Lofty was there at the back post to volley home.[LNB] Gabs my boy: Milner celebrates Agbonlahor's opener[LNB]7.56: GOAL! Yakubu grabs the lead for the Toffees. Smart work from Bilyaletdinov (who will be known as Billy from here on in) and the striker curled a lovely strike home. David Moyes announced a strong side tonight and it would seem his side mean business in this much-maligned Cup, too. [LNB]7.51: Spurs hit the crossbar! Palacios interchanged well with Bentley who found Dos Santos in the box and he crashed his shot against the bar. Not much going on elsewhere. [LNB]7.48: GOAL! Agbonlahor grabs an early lead for the Villans. John Carew's driving run and cross found the young striker at the near post and he flicked it in for his fourth goal in as many games. [LNB]7.45: Early chance for Chelsea - Mikel's powerful run found Malouda in space but he struck his shot straight at the keeper from 17-yards out.[LNB] Lightning start: Yakubu gives Everton an early lead at the KC stadium[LNB]7.40: We're just a couple of minutes away from kick-off now, if you have any thoughts on tonight's matches do get in touch - tom.bellwood@dailymail.co.uk is where I'll be. [LNB]7.34: It's all sweetness and light for me this evening - Spurs fans will be relieved to hear that Michael Dawson and Heurelho Gomes make their returns against Preston. [LNB]7.31: Some great news coming out of Stamford Bridge as we hear that, after an what seems like  an eternity out injured, Joe Cole starts as captain against QPR. Carlo Ancelotti makes 10 changes to the side that beat Spurs on Sunday with just Florent Malouda  retaining his place. [LNB]7.25: You wont be surprised to hear that the early team news we have points to wholesale changes in many of  the top-flight teams. [LNB]Michael Owen is given just his second start for United while Wolves' manager Mick McCarthy has selected an attacking side for the tie at Old Trafford. [LNB]Spurs go to Deepdale with hardly a defender to their name but Harry Redknapp has been boosted by the return of Michael Dawson and outcast David Bentley gets the nod. [LNB]Premier League leaders Chelsea host neighbours QPR - the visitors managed a great result in this competition last year - defeating Aston Villa - and will be hoping for another shock tonight. [LNB]Strugglers Hull will want a positive result at the KC Stadium tonight after making a poor start to their second season in the top flight but David Moyes names a strong side to face the Tigers. [LNB]Martin O'Neil has stated his desire to have a good run in this cup after crashing out of Europe early.  [LNB]And Mark Hughes' high-flying City will look to shake off the hangover after their late, late defeat to United on Sunday. [LNB]7.15pm: Good evening and welcome to Sportsmail's coverage of the second night of third round Carling Cup action.[LNB]Tonight's matches include the holders Manchester United against Wolves, last season's finalists Tottenham away at Preston and there's a west London derby between Chelsea and QPR to look forward to.[LNB]Last night, Liverpool and Arsenal overcame potential banana skins ties, Bolton saw off West Ham, Pompey had to come from behind against Carlisle and Blackburn hung on to beat a spirited Nottingham Forest. [LNB]Elsewhere there were victories for Peterborough, Stoke, Scunthorpe and Sunderland.[LNB] Celebration: The United players enjoy a champagne shower after defeating Tottenham in last season's final[LNB] Van der Sar could extend his stay at Manchester United by another yearSpurs flop David Bentley handed Carling Cup role to rescue career at White Hart LaneCarlo Ancelotti: I pray, but not for football, God has better things to doPolice will not investigate Everton over Diouf's Goodison banana claimsAston Villa boss Martin O'Neill blames money for rising trend of player power City's Bellamy escapes FA charge for attacking fan during Manchester derbyfddsfsdfsdfdfsdfsdfsdfsdfsdfsdf  Explore more:People:Martin Petrov, David Moyes, James Milner, Leon Osman, Gareth Bale, Chris Brown, Joe Cole, Danny Welbeck, Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane, Michael Dawson, Michael Owen, Gareth Barry, John Carew, Stiliyan Petrov, MARK HUGHES, Peter Crouch, Harry Redknapp, Gary Neville, Mick McCarthy, Carlo Ancelotti, David Bentley, David Platt, Fabio Da Silva, Tom HuddlestonePlaces:Liverpool, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Ireland, Europe
