Abbott: Clayton option remains open

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott is still hoping to persuade former loanee Adam Clayton to return to Brunton Park next season.[LNB] The Manchester City midfielder impressed during a loan spell with the Cumbrians last term and, although the youngster wants to prove himself at Eastlands next season, Abbott has not given up hope of signing him again.[LNB]"At the minute Adam is away in Mexico but I have spoken to him and his agent all summer," he told the News & Star. "He has spoken in the press about fighting for his Man City place and getting into their team. If that changes we would be daft not to make him an offer. We will decide what to do based on what happens with him at Man City in pre-season."[LNB]Abbott has also revealed the door is still open for Tom Aldred despite the defender recently rejecting a new contract offer with the club.[LNB]He added: "The last time I spoke to Tom he said he definitely wanted to sign. I was very concerned the next day when we had an e-mail saying he didn't want to sign. He has had other thoughts thrown at him and now we have to see what he decides.[LNB]"The door is always open here. If he decides the grass is greener somewhere else, he might chase that. We put an offer on the table and he turned that down. I don't know what offer he wants because there has been no contact since our last conversation."
