6 things we learnt from game week 24 in the Premier League

09 February 2015 13:44

We've crunched the numbers from the weekend's Premier League action to pick out the most interesting stats.

This week we've seen Manchester City fade further away, another late Tottenham triumph and the shots dry up for Sunderland.

Lacking ideas?

Man City Clean Sheets

We began 2015 with the promise of a proper title race as Manchester City closed an eight point gap to draw level with Chelsea at the top of the division, but four matches later the margin is almost as wide with the London side claiming 10 points to City's three.

Only struggling Burnley have gone longer without a clean sheet than Manuel Pellegrini's stuttering side, whom he assessed to be 'lacking idea'.

At this rate, they'll soon be lacking a title as well.

City on the chase

Chelsea Man City

It's not just Chelsea that they're chasing: Manchester City have now conceded first in each of their last three Premier League matches, which can only be adding to the sense of desperation at the Etihad.

After trailing to struggling Hull for just under an hour on Saturday, they have now spent more than 300 minutes in losing positions this season: almost double the amount of time that Chelsea have been behind.

Kaning it

Tottenham Kane

There may still be a few names above his in the Premier League top scorer chart, but nobody's goals have made more of a difference than rising star Harry Kane's.

His late winner against Arsenal was the tenth league goal he's scored this season which has either given his club the lead or drawn them level“ more than any other player.

Better late than never

Tottenham Winners

Snatching victory at the death is becoming something of a signature move for Tottenham this season: their triumph over Arsenal was the sixth league match that they've won with a goal in the last five minutes.

Incredibly this is just one fewer than the seven similarly late winners that all of the other 19 Premier League clubs have managed between them.

Black Cats without claws

Sunderland Shots

Something very strange is happening' or rather isn't happening' at Sunderland lately: Gus Poyet's side are barely shooting.

Every Premier League side has mustered more than 50 shots in the last five rounds of fixtures except the Black Cats, who’ve not even managed 30. Having gambled on bringing in an expert poacher Jermain Defoe during January, it seems strange to deprive him of ammunition.

Heading down?

Burnley Headers

For the second home game in a row, Burnley raced into a promising two-goal lead only to end the afternoon frustrated; although at least this time they weren't robbed of all three points.

West Brom's two replies came from an all-too-familiar source, being the thirteenth and fourteenth headed goals that the Clarets have conceded this season: the division's highest. Few were expecting the Clarets to tear up trees in the Premier League, but continuing to make the same mistakes could ultimately cost them dear.
