Southend 2-2 Macclesfield: Report

Silkmen seal spot-kick winMacclesfield ended their Roots Hall hoodoo by beating Southend United 5-3 on penalties in an eventful FA Cup first round replay. The Silkmen had lost on all of their previous six visits to the south Essex side but finally ended that wretched record in bizarre fashion after a 2-2 draw.Nat Brown's decisive penalty initially seemed to have been saved by Southend goalkeeper Glenn Morris. However, as the custodian celebrated the ball spun back in to the net - meaning it was the Silkmen who progressed to take on Huddersfield Town in the second round. The teams had again been locked level at 2-2 after 120 minutes as Southend twice fought back from going behind.Emile Sinclair fired Macclesfield in to a 61st minute lead when he capatilised on a mistake from Peter Gilbert before rounding Morris to score.Southend equalised three minutes from time when Josh Simpson volleyed home to take it to extra time.Aristote Nsiala then volleyed the Silkmen back in to the lead before Barry Corr tapped home a second leveller for Southend. However, Corr went from hero to villain as he was the only one to miss in the shoot-out as Macclesfield finally edged through.
