Assistant manager Ray Mathias has warned Macclesfield Town they must improve on the below-par performance at Rochdale on Saturday if they want to retain their Football League status.
The Silkmen were thrashed 5-0 by their local rivals and are now just two points clear of the relegation zone in 21st place in the League Two table.
Paul Ince's side have three games left to stave off the threat of relegation and experienced number two Mathias has demanded a vast improvement.
"Our away form is worrying and we have to be better in our next away game - even if that means putting seven players at the back," he said.
"It was totally out of character for some of the players. I feel sorry for the fans and I apologise for the performance because it was awful.
"Confidence looked fragile and Rochdale didn't have to work too hard for their goals."
