Saah opens account in Gulls victory

Brian Saah scored his first goal for Torquay as they swept to their first home league win of the season, downing Macclesfield 3-0.

Saah, signed by Martin Ling in summer from former club Cambridge, rose at the far post to head home Kevin Nicholson's 63rd minute corner from the left.

It was no more than the home side deserved as they had twice forced superb saves from Town keeper Jose Veiga just minutes earlier.

Veiga had parried away a Nicholson 35 yard thunderbolt on 58 minutes, and then seconds later, as Nicholson's corner from the left was cleared, Ian Morris let fly with a superb dipping drive from 20 yards.

Veiga did brilliantly to pedal back and flap the ball from under his bar and over, but the pressure was unrelenting and it was not long before United opened their account.

Chris McPhee - recalled in the absence of injured target man Rene Howe - benefitted after a defence-splitting run by skipper Lee Mansell on 74 minutes.

Mansell took the initiative to draw the defence on the edge of the six-yard box before squaring the ball to grateful McPhee who slid the ball home

But the best goal of the game came when Eunan O'Kane clipped the ball over Veiga after running into the box having been set up by substitute Mark Ellis.
