Simpson raps dreadful defending

Macclesfield manager Gary Simpson admitted his side were their own worst enemy as reckless defending allowed Gillingham to romp to all three points at the Moss Rose. Hamza Bencherif had actually fired the Silkmen into a seventh-minute lead but their advantage did not last long as the home side`s defence caved in and was torn apart by four goals in the space of 24 minutes. Chris Whelpdale, Josh Gowling, Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa were all on target, meaning Tyrone Barnett`s second-half header proved a mere consolation for Macclesfield as they went down 4-2. And coming after the 6-0 whitewash in the FA Cup at Huddersfield last time out, it means Simpson`s side have now conceded 10 goals in two games. He said: "We've beaten ourselves here, four balls into the box and they've scored four goals. You'd think that couldn't happen with some of our height but it was just a lack of application - three players going for the same ball and then it dropping down to a spare man who scored. "Some of our youngsters just haven't been through this, it was 10 goals in about two hours of football. It was bread and butter mistakes and I take pride in putting out a side that will give everything it's got. We haven't got much money but we have got tremendous spirit, yet in the last three games we've been found wanting."
