Silkmen sunk by Shrews

Shrewsbury renewed their promotion push with a smash-and-grab raid to sneak a 1-0 win at luckless Macclesfield. Having been under the cosh for most of the first half, Shrewsbury scored on the break in the 54th minute with a flowing four-man move which ended in Steve Leslie clipping a neat chip to the far corner. Former Liverpool trainee Craig Lindfield had two early chances for Macclesfield, placing a scissor-kick into the arms of goalkeeper David Button before firing a 10-yard snap shot inches wide. Macclesfield should have taken the lead in the 33rd minute when Reneil Sappleton released Colin Daniel but the youngster could only slide his drive wide. Shrewsbury took control of the game after they scored and should have added another when Dave Hibbert planted a volley wide. Substitute John Rooney stung the hands of Button before Macclesfield wasted their best chance to equalise when Daniel blasted over in the closing stages.
