Macclesfield 2-4 Gillingham: Match Report

11 December 2010 23:16
Gills continue fine run Resurgent Gillingham scored four first-half goals to defeat Macclesfield 4-2 and record their third successive away win. Macclesfield took the lead after seven minutes when makeshift centre-back Hamza Bencherif saw a 25-yard free kick deflect off the wall to leave the unlucky Alan Julian stranded. However, less than a minute later Chris Whelpdale equalised when his 15-yard drive bounced over keeper Jose Veiga who had committed himself too soon. The Portuguese keeper was again beaten by a bouncing ball after 11 minutes when Josh Gowling found the top corner with a shot on the diagonal. Macclesfield centre-backs were being run ragged and in the 18th minute Danny Spiller crossed for the unmarked Cody McDonald to head home his sixth goal of the season from close range. The home side's furious protests were waved away in the 33rd minute when Adebayo Akinfenwa seemed to push Veiga in the back before poking home the loose ball from close range to extend Gillingham's lead. Gillingham goalkeeper Alan Julian then saved superbly from Emile Sinclair and Vinny Mukendi as Macclesfield pressed before half-time. The Silkmen finally grabbed a lifeline in the 67th minute when Tyrone Barnett converted a Matthew Hamshaw corner with a bullet header from eight yards for his sixth of the season. However, it proved only a consolation.
