Gulls at the double against Macc

Torquay scored twice from close range in the second half to extend their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-1 victory at Macclesfield.

The visitors should have scored in the 21st minute, but Taiwo Atieno headed a Kevin Nicholson cross over the bar from just six yards out.

Carl Tremarco went close for Macc, stinging the hands of Gulls keeper Robert Olejnik with a 22-yard rising drive, while home stopper Jose Veiga had to be at his best at the other end to parry wide a fierce 20-yard drive from Danny Stevens as the two teams went into half-time goalless.

After the break, Tony Diagne forced a full-length save from Olejnik with a low 25-yard shot before Torquay took the lead after 51 minutes.

Ian Morris headed home a bouncing ball in the six-yard box to give the Devon side the advantage.

Macc were unlucky not to be back on level terms in the 55th minute when a back-header from Colin Daniel rebounded off the far post into the arms of Olejnik before, seconds later, Torquay's Danny Stevens' four-yard drive was cleared off the line by Shaun Brisley.

Joseph Oastler forced another reaction stop from Veiga with a 10-yard snap-shot as Torquay pushed for a second, while substitute Ben Mills went close to equalising for the hosts with a 15-yard drive which flew inches over the bar in the 65th minute.

However, it was the away side who got the second goal of the game though Mark Ellis, who extended the Gulls' lead in the 75th minute with a volley on the turn from eight yards.

Macc were given a lifeline when centre-back Brisley headed home an Elliot Hewitt cross in the 82nd minute but it was too little too late.
