Lowly Darlo undone by Smith slip

The goal came 15 minutes in when a low ball in from Colin Daniel was turned past his own keeper by Smith. Darlington went close to an equaliser in the 32nd minute when Kevin Gall sent a Jamie Devitt cross into the side netting with a brave diving header. Substitute Curtis Main should have equalised for the home side in the 51st minute but the teenager somehow sidefooted a pass from Devitt over the Macclesfield bar from eight yards out. Main went closer in the 73rd minute when he headed against a post from close range after Ian Miller had headed on a Mark Convery free kick. The Macclesfield goal was threatened again in the 84th minute when Devitt found Steve Foster in the area, but, like Main, the Darlington skipper missed from eight yards as the visitors held on to their slender lead. In time added on at the end Darlington were caught out at the back when substitute Ricky Sappleton burst forward, rounded keeper Russell Hoult, but fired against the post.
