Former France star Govou signs for Lyon as amateur
Former France international forward Sidney Govou signed for the club where he established his reputation, ailing French giants Lyon, on Tuesday.
However, the 34-year-old -- capped 49 times and a member of the side that reached the 2006 World Cup final -- has been reduced through a lack of form and injury to sign on as an amateur, restricting him to playing only with the reserves.
Govou, who won seven Ligue 1 titles with Lyon during his spell there from 1999 to 2010, was released by Ligue 1 side Evian in the close season after two injury-marred seasons with them, rupturing jhis left Achilles in March 2010 and then his knee tendon in March this year.
Govou, who also ruptured his right Achilles while with Lyon in 2009, also had a troubled spell at Greek side Panathinaikos, after leaving Lyon.
He was regularly disciplined by the team authorities for breaking curfew and in a bid to stay there agreed to take a huge drop in salary from the 1.5million euros ($2million) a year he was due to earn on his two year contract.
