Luton Town have terminated the contract of manager Kevin Blackwell with immediate effect in a fresh twist to the saga surrounding the cash-strapped League One club.
Blackwell announced his decision to resign last week and was set to leave the crisis-torn club on February 9.
The former Leeds United boss was in charge at Anfield on Tuesday night as the Hatters lost their FA Cup third round replay 5-0 to Liverpool.
However, despite the club's administrator confirming a £10million rescue package had been agreed with a consortium headed by television presenter Nick Owen in the build-up to the game, Blackwell has now left Kenilworth Road with immediate effect.
In a statement last week, Blackwell revealed the reasons for his decision to resign.
"We came to Luton Town last spring with a clear mission. It revolved around ambition, adequate investment for growth and the very real promise of a new stadium," he and his management team said in a statement.
"Very quickly we found that Luton Town Football Club did not do what it said on the tin.
"We have had to generate cash - more than £3 million from the sale of key players - rather than invest it.
"Our inheritance has ended up including law-suits and FA charges. The club moved into administration and we lost ten points.
"It is not our role or intention to blame anybody for the state we are in as a club, but we have to face reality for ourselves.
"It is now our belief that no possible future scenario for this club can match - in any way, shape or form - what we came here to do."
