Luton Town boss Kevin Blackwell admitted his patched up side had been outclassed during Tuesday's 5-0 FA Cup third round exit defeat to Liverpool.
The Hatters frustrated the Premier League giants for 44 minutes at Anfield before the floodgates opened and they were well-beaten.
However, after the recent off-field troubles which resulted in the sale of a number of key players, Blackwell was proud of the effort on display.
"They were square pegs in round holes, but they gave me everything they have got," he said.
"There is no doubt they have ability in abundance and have done exceptionally well for (manager) Rafa (Benitez).
"It was an awesome team they put out. Clearly they have done a great job for the manager."
Meanwhile, Blackwell denied claims that a proposed takeover deal for the cash-strapped League One club could persuade him to reverse his decision to leave Kenilworth Road next month.
"I don't know what is around the corner. As it is I hope the new owners move in the right direction," he added.
