Smith at the double

Striker Michael Smith's brace saw Swindon fight back to defeat Luton 2-1 in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

A quiet first half saw the Robins create the best chances as Ben Gladwin fired straight at Mark Tyler from inside the area.

The Hatters' only real opportunities came from long range, with Scott Griffiths, Fraser Franks and Andy Drury all off target.

It was in the second period that the game really kicked into life and the Hatters went ahead after 53 minutes when Swindon captain Nathan Thompson was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Former Robins winger Luke Rooney stepped up to beat Wes Foderingham and drill home his first goal for the club.

Swindon were level with a spot-kick of their own in the 76th minute when Nathan Byrne was tripped by Drury and Smith made no mistake.

The forward had his second of the tie after 81 minutes, dancing through the Hatters' back-pedalling defence and coolly slotting past Tyler.

As Luton pushed for an equaliser during injury time Rooney went down in the box, but he was controversially deemed to have dived and was sent off for a second bookable offence.
