Dagenham move closer to brink of relegation after Luton defeat

Dagenham's relegation from League Two was all but confirmed after they were beaten 1-0 by Luton at Kenilworth Road.

Pelly Ruddock's first-half goal for the hosts saw Daggers remain 11 points from safety, but they now have just five games left to save their season and could be down following this weekend's matches.

Luton had dominated possession early on with Josh McQuoid side-footing straight at goalkeeper Mark Cousins, while the Daggers stopper also denied Stephen O'Donnell.

Daggers' only effort in the first 20 minutes saw Ashley Hemmings fire tamely at Elliot Justham from 20 yards.

Luton broke the deadlock on 38 minutes though when a quick break down the right saw Ruddock lash a wicked effort over Cousins and in off the underside of the bar.

Daggers should have levelled moments after the break when Justham fumbled Christian Doidge's header and Jamie Cureton's effort was cleared off the line by Glen Rea.

Hatters almost had a second through Jonathan Smith, his glancing header blocked by Cousins.

The visitors were almost on level terms as Matty Cash had a free header, but put it over the top, while Luton substitute Joe Pigott was wayward with his attempt.

Daggers almost rescued a point with five minutes to go, but Oliver Hawkins saw his close range effort hit the bar, while Luton should have had a second, Pigott wide once more.
