David Beckham, whose five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expires this month, was named the Major League Soccer Comeback Player of the Year on Monday.

The 36-year-old English star was recognized in his fifth season in the North American league after coming back from a serious leg injury that limited him to just 10 games with the Galaxy in 2010.

Beckham suffered a torn Achilles tendon which destroyed his hopes of playing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

This year Beckham registered 15 assists (second in the league) in 26 games and scored twice. Beckham also surpassed his personal MLS-bests in games played (previously 25) and assists (10).

The award was voted on by club representatives, media, and players.

In addition to winning Comeback Player of the Year, Beckham was named recently to the MLS Best XI this season, joining four other midfielders on the all-star team.

Beckham will play in his first MLS Cup final on Sunday when the Galaxy face Houston at the Home Depot Centre.
