Zanetti would welcome Mascherano deal

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti reckons Javier Mascherano will fit in well at the San Siro if the Nerazzurri can persuade Liverpool to sell.

Rafa Benitez is reported to have made Mascherano one of his top targets after taking over at Inter and Zanetti reckons his Argentina team-mate would be an ideal signing.

"Mascherano? He's a great player, which retrieves a lot of balls. He would suit to Inter," Zanetti told Sky Italia.

Inter's sporting director, Marco Branca, has refused to rule out a move for Mascherano, insisting Benitez will make the final decision on any signings.

"I can say that he is a great player," Branca told Sky Italia. "There are good players that we can take and others that cannot be taken. It depends from the requests of the clubs.

"Mascherano and Cambiasso together? From a technical standpoint, the coach must give the answer.

"What does Benitez think about it? I didn't ask him."

Liverpool are fearing bids for all their top stars this summer but they received some good news on Wednesday when a scan revealed Fernando Torres suffered only a small tear to an adductor muscle.

The Spain striker should now be fit for the start of the Premier League season and so new Reds boss Roy Hodgson can turn his attention to the club's pre-season training camp in Switzerland.

All 12 of the players that played at the World Cup were missing from the party which flew out on Wednesday morning but Milan Jovanovic has now linked up with the squad, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos expected before the end of the week.

England trio Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson are due to resume training next week but will be based back at Melwood rather than travelling to Switzerland.

Liverpool are playing three friendlies as part of their Swiss trip, against Al-Hilal, Grasshoppers and Kaiserslautern.
