Real Madrid are ready to give up their fight to sign Xabi Alonso. The Liverpool midfielder is wanted by the free-spending Spaniards as they attempt to conquer Europe next season. Real are ready to take their summer spending to an incredible £136million once Cristiano Ronaldo follows Kaka to the Bernabeu, while they also remain in the hunt for Franck Ribery. But director of sport Jorge Valdano has admitted that Alonso may be one player who remains beyond their reach. Wanted: Real Madrid are still in the hunt for Ribery 'With regards to Xabi Alonso, Liverpool made an announcement on Sundayand it seems to me they don't want to sell him, so it will be hard forhim to end up playing here,' he said. 'I've always liked him, since my first time at Real Madrid. 'I did a massive effort to bring him here a few years back, we met with Real Sociedad but when I left the deal slipped into the background. 'Liverpool valued him at 18million euros last year because he wasn't an essential player. But he is now. 'They've given him more chances to play and he has responded magnificently.'
