Xabi - Records count for nothing

Xabi Alonso claims Liverpool's season will be a failure if they miss out on the title, regardless of any records they achieve. The Reds can become the first team in Premier League history to lose just two games and not land the league trophy, if they avoid defeat in their final matches of the season against West Brom and Tottenham. Anfield boss Rafael Benitez - who insists Manchester United are not necessarily the best team in England should they claim domestic honours this term - has urged his Merseyside outfit to beat their highest points total of 82 from their remaining games even if the league ends up in Manchester. But Spanish midfielder Alonso reckons the current campaign cannot be deemed a success if they end up empty-handed. "The league has been better than it has before for us," said the 27-year-old. "But if you don't win anything then you cannot consider it to be a good season. We have to be disappointed with ourselves, try to be critics and to analyse the things we haven't done well. "Of course you also have to think that we have made progress - and we have to keep working on that basis. "But it's very painful to look back and think of all the draws that we had."
