Xabi Alonso to discuss Liverpool future as Real Madrid wait

Alonso and his fellow Spaniard Alvaro Arbeloa have both been the subject of interest from Madrid, who have embarked on a staggering spending spree since Florentino Perez's return to power. A bid of £23 million has reportedly been made for the pair, and Alonso said: "I don't know where I will play next season. In respect to all this, I have not closed any door. "I don't see why a marriage with Madrid is impossible, but I would also have no regrets at all staying at Liverpool. "My relationship with Benitez is professional, just like he has with any other player. I believe that is how things will stay." Alonso is one of Liverpool's most popular players, and his wonderful range of passing has been vital to their successes under Benitez. His departure would be mourned at Anfield, although it is unclear how highly Alonso is rated by Benitez, who attempted to sell the midfielder last summer. Arbeloa, meanwhile, would seem certain to leave after Liverpool signed Glen Johnson for £17 million from Portsmouth.
