Who’s after who - your guide to the Premier League’s January sales

31 December 2009 00:00
WITH the transfer window opening tomorrow, we take a look at what business the 20 Premier League clubs might be doing.[LNB]ARSENAL[LNB]Analysis: Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen his forward options after Robin van Persie was ruled out with an ankle injury for most of the season.[LNB]Possible departures: Jack Wilshere and Fran Merida could be allowed on loan.[LNB]ASTON VILLA[LNB]Analysis: Martin O'Neill has quality and cover throughout his squad but would be interested if players at the right price can add something to his squad.[LNB]Possible departures: Emile Heskey will need regular football and plenty of teams would offer it if Villa cannot.[LNB]BIRMINGHAM CITY[LNB]Analysis: Alex McLeish has money to spend following Carson Yeung's takeover but will not be held to ransom by other clubs. The Scot could look for a full-back and may need more attacking options. Kevin Kuranyi and Milan Jovanovic have been mentioned.[LNB]Possible departures: Fringe players could go, such as Kevin Phillips, Lee Carsley, Gary McSheffrey, Marcus Bent and possibly Damien Johnson.[LNB]BLACKBURN ROVERS[LNB]Analysis: Sam Allardyce has a history of shrewd signings and also for resurrecting players' careers. It is no surprise he was linked with a move for Ruud van Nistelrooy.[LNB]Possible departures: Benni McCarthy has been linked with a move away from Ewood Park.[LNB]BOLTON WANDERERS[LNB]Analysis: Keeping hold of Gary Cahill will be important for their new manager, and the appointment will look for the usual mix of bargains and loans to bolster the squad.[LNB]Possible departures: Cahill will only be allowed to go if an offer of £15m or more comes in.[LNB]BURNLEY[LNB]Analysis: Owen Coyle has put in an audacious bid for Jack Wilshere from Arsenal on loan. If that comes off it could be one of the signings of the season. David Nugent's loan from Portsmouth may become permanent.[LNB]Possible departures: Coyle has a settled core of first-team players but may need his squad in the second half of the season.[LNB]CHELSEA[LNB]Analysis: Carlo Ancelotti insists he will not sign players during the window. The Italian could do with a striker and cover during the African Nations Cup, with Sergio Aguero a long-term target.[LNB]Possible departures: Ancelotti does not have many surplus to requirements.
