Wayne Rooney out of Manchester United v Liverpool

Wayne Rooney has been left out of Manchester United's clash with Stoke at Old Trafford tonight.[LNB]The England striker hurt his left ankle in a challenge with West Bromwich's Chris Brunt towards the end of Saturday's win at the Hawthorns and will be rested as a precaution when United look to go three points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League.[LNB]Rooney trained at Carrington on Monday and is available, but it was decided to hold him back for Sunday's FA Cup third round tie at home to old rivals Liverpool.[LNB] Pain game: Wayne Rooney suffered the ankle knock at West Bromwich[LNB]It is a blow for the 25-year-old after he finally scored his first goal for United from open play since March, and then capped a fine performance against West Bromwich by providing the cross for Javier Hernandez to head the winner.[LNB]Rooney initially limped off the pitch, leaving United with 10 men after Sir Alex Ferguson had used all three of his substitutes, but then came back on to help his team-mates for the final few minutes.[LNB]Hernandez or fit-again Michael Owen are now set to partner Dimitar Berbatov against Stoke.[LNB]Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was also missing from the gathering as he stayed behind at Carrington in bid to shake off calf injury.
