Transfer News - Real Madrid end Gerrard pursuit

Real Madrid have ended speculation linking them to a move for Steven Gerrard, with a representative of the club suggesting the Liverpool and England midfielder is too old and too expensive.

"The president does not agree with Gerrard because he is 30 and Perez doesn't want to know," Real's transfer consultant Ernesto Bronzetti told the Daily Star.

"Plus, Liverpool asked for 70 million Euros."

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is desperate to keep Gerrard at Anfield, especially with Chelsea continuing their pursuit of Fernando Torres - despite the Spanish striker having suffered an injury in the World Cup Final.

Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko is hopeful the club will drop their £50m asking price, smoothing the way for a move to Manchester City.

"I want to clarify that is is not a matter of money, but of ambition. I feel I have to take a leap of quality and play for a big club," he told the Daily Mail.

Finally, Cesc Fabregas hit the headlines again yesterday when he donned a Barcelona shirt during Spain's World Cup celebrations in Madrid.

Fortunately for Gunners fans it was just a prank orchestrated by Pepe Reina, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol.

For now anyway.
