Torres misses Teesside trip
27 Feb 2009 - 14:37:34
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres will miss Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough with the twisted ankle he sustained against Real Madrid.
The Spain international limped out of Wednesday's Champions League victory in the 61st minute and has not recovered in time for the trip to Teesside.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez told the club's official website: "Torres is not fit and won't be in the squad.
"It is a problem he has had before and we will have to check over the weekend to see if he is available for Sunderland."
Steven Gerrard is included in the squad but Daniel Agger misses out with a back injury.
Meanwhile, Albert Riera insists Benitez's side can still win the Premier League title even though they are currently seven points behind leaders Manchester United.
He said: "We have Manchester United soon in the league and before that we have two games in four days.
"These games are really important because Manchester United play just one game before playing us - we play two.
"These six points mean we can be nearer to them. Then if we win at Old Trafford they might be a bit nervous.
"If Manchester United win all their games we can't do anything but football is football.
"The Champions League is back and they're also in other cups, so I'm sure they'll have problems at some stage.
"But we can't think about what they are doing. We have to win as many points as possible and then see at the end."
