Torres issues Alonso plea

Fernando Torres has urged Liverpool not to sell his Spanish colleague Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.

The midfielder has been linked with Real throughout the summer and, even though Reds boss has frequently said Alonso is staying at Anfield, the rumours have refused to go away.

Torres is worried that Alonso's departure would seriously weaken the Liverpool squad, and he told The Sun: "It would be a bad piece of work if Xabi left.

"He plays his cards close to his chest so I don't know what's going to happen.

"I'd put Xabi's own wishes ahead of everything else, of course, but he's got three years left on his contract with us and I'd love it if he stays.

"It would be a serious loss for Liverpool if he left this summer."
